Greene FD’s quick response halts structure fire

GREENE – The Greene Fire Department responded to a garage fire about a mile outside of the village Thursday and was able to put the flames out quickly, saving the structure.
Firemen responded at around 10:15 a.m. Thursday after the home owner, Phil Lord, called 911 to report his garage had caught fire at 671 State Highway 206 in the Town of Greene.
The first four-man crew of volunteers arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later in the 213 Fire Engine and heavy smoke could be seen pouring from the two-story garage’s windows.
Fire crews, with the aid of a nearby stream, brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes.
Greene Fire Chief Dan Montgomery said the fast response allowed crews to catch the blaze before it spread throughout the structure.
Investigators believe the fire began at the bottom of a staircase and burned its way along the steps, eventually causing serious internal fire and smoke damage to the upper floor. A few vehicles inside the garage appeared to received no or minor damage. The owner’s residence, a trailer about four feet from the garage, also suffered no damage.
Montgomery said the cause of the fire was determined to be from a model airplane battery charger.
