Barnes scores 27 as G-MU prevails in OT

MORRIS – G-MU forward Kristen Barnes had a quiet game for four quarters, then spoke up offensively in overtime. Barnes had a three-point play off a pass from Miranda Hill, and added another layup scoring all five of her points during the extra period as the Raiders topped Morris Friday night.
Tanya Barnes had 27 points for G-MU, 13 in the opening period, and Hill scored 11 to give the Raiders a 3-0 mark in division play. “The way we’re playing, it helps to have Tanya, who opens things up,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Miranda is playing unbelievably for us, too. Morris has a pretty good club, and the Flint (Amanda) girl shot lights out.”
Flint scored the tying bucket in regulation with under 35 seconds to play. G-MU was called for an offensive foul on its last possession, and Morris had a shot for the win that was off the mark.
Flint scored 20 in the loss and Kelsea Webster added 14 points.
G-MU (5-2, 3-0) plays at Worcester today in a makeup game from Jan. 5.

CINCINNATUS – Otselic Valley was shot just 16 percent from the field (9-for-55) and did not make a free throw in 11 attempts in Friday’s loss at Cincinnatus.
Nicolette Otto and Whitney Cobb had 12 points apiece for Cincy against the offensively-challenged Vikings. The Vikes committed 23 turnovers, although they did pick up 10 steals. “Most of those steals came off the press, but you can’t press much when you’re not scoring,” said OV coach Ron Graham. “Cincinnatus made the shots it was supposed to make, and we’re not right now.”
OV (3-4) faces Madison on Wednesday.

HANCOCK – Greene’s offense came alive in the fourth quarter nearly doubling its three-quarter output to prevail at Hancock on Saturday.
Jessica Brooks had all 10 of her points in the second half, and scored six in a 19-point third quarter. The Trojans made seven free throws to pad the advantage, and six different players contributed to the point total. “Defensively, we were fine in this game,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We just had trouble shooting. In the fourth quarter, even off our misses on foul shots, we benefited with offensive rebounds.”
The Trojans extended a three-point halftime lead to 12 blanking Hancock in the third quarter. Most of the Wildcats’ 13 points in the last quarter came when the final outcome was no longer in doubt. Rebecca Smith added nine points for Greene.

MORRIS – Down by six early in the fourth quarter and with its unbeaten record on the line, G-MU clamped down on defense the final six minutes, and had eight points from Eddie Ray Cotton to edge Morris on the road Friday night.
Cotton hit two three-pointers in the fourth and added a deuce to finish with 14 points. Ian Edwards scored 10 and DeMario Reed eight for G-MU. Reed’s final basket, a short bank shot on the right side put the Raiders in front, 41-40. Two possessions later, Jon Scofield canned a turnaround jumper from close range to cap the scoring. “We took a timeout (early in the fourth quarter), and we told them that Morris had its run, so lets stop the momentum and get good possessions,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “We got good possessions and had good defensive effort on the other side of the ball. That allowed us to chip at it and take the lead.”
Most importantly, the Raiders upped their Tri-Valley East Division log to 3-0 with a home date against 2010 West division champion Cherry Valley-Springfield on Tuesday.

Dylan Jones scored 19 points for the Beavers, and Corey Cowen hit three three-pointers finishing with 15.
“We dug a big hole for ourselves in the first quarter, and couldn’t dig out of it,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We didn’t play well enough to get the game back in our favor.”
Dusty Davis had a season-high 22 points to lead OV, and Karl Graham chipped in with 10. The Vikings host Madison on Tuesday.
