NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter, and withstood Afton’s third-quarter rally to win for the third time this season.
Jordan Anderson scored seven of her 12 points in a 17-7 opening stanza. Amanda Off picked up the scoring in the second half bucketing 11 of her 19 points. Afton, down by double digits early, came as close as four points in the third quarter. “We were able to go on a run after they cut it to four, and it wasn’t close again,” said UV coach Brandi Backus.
Britney Patten had 12 points to lead Afton

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville blasted Madison early taking a 31-8 lead into halftime en route to a non-division victory Monday night.
Caitlynn Adams had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and seven steals for S-E. Adams scored nine in a 21-6 first quarter, and had all but two of her points by halftime. “We did a good job creating turnovers with our man-to-man defense, and that gave us easy opportunities to score,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan.
The Marauders also dominated the offensive glass finishing with 22 offensive rebounds. Jordan Van Althuis had six points and 10 rebounds off the bench, and Bridget Irwin finished with 12 points and seven steals.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley halted a four-game losing streak Monday night winning its second game of the season.
Justin Hofer scored eight points and Brett Smith five as the Storm jumped out to a 15-6 lead. Hofer, who finished with 17 points, had seven more points in the third as the lead stood at eight points.
“We played pretty good offense in the first and third quarters,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “We were patient and moved it around pretty good.”
Defensively, UV forced the Crimson Knights into three 10-second violations. “We put a lot of pressure on them,” Osborne said of the defense. “Usually one 10-second violation in a game is good. To have three, that doesn’t happen too often.”
UV is at Harpursville today.

Oxford crowns three champions
DEPOSIT – Oxford finished fifth in team scoring, and crowned three champions at the Stan Elinsky Tournament hosted by Deposit on Saturday.
The Blackhawks earned titles in the first three weight classes as Joe Nelson (96) won by technical fall over Harpursville’s Jacob Andrews; Austin Crandall (103) won a decision over Deposit-Hancock’s Tozhia Possemato; and Jeremiah Winter (112) made short work of Tioga’s Kaleb Stone earning a pin in 59 seconds.

Big performances for Woodfords, Noelle at Southern Tier Invitational
CORTLAND – At the Southern Tier Invitational last weekend at SUNY Cortland, Chad Noelle of Greene, running for B-G/Afton’s indoor track and field team, had the fastest 3,200 meters time in the country winning in 9:20.48.
Noelle ran the Foot Locker Nationals several weeks ago, and this was his first time back in competition, said B-G/A coach, Robb Munro.
Oxford’s Katie and Emily Woodford, also running for B-G/A, helped their team to top-three finishes. Emily Woodford was third in the triple jump (35-8), and had the second fastest 300-meter time in Section IV history (behind Lindsay Seymour of Elmira) finishing second overall in 41.44. Katie Woodford was second in the 55-meter dash, and the Woofords teamed with Julia Knapp and Isamarie Ramos to place second in the 1,600-meter relay completing the race two seconds shy of the sectional record.
“They are incredibly talented and easy to coach,” Munro said of the Woodfords.
Boys’ Bowling
Chenango Valley 4, Norwich 1
NORWICH – STAC Central Division leader Chenango Valley won the final two games to deal the Tornado their second straight defeat.
CV’s lead-off man, Tyler Ruffo, led all bowlers with a 674 series.
Joe Bazarnik finished with a 594 series to pace Norwich, who hosts Johnson City at Plaza Lanes on Wednesday.
