Seton Catholic Central 54, Norwich 44
BINGHAMTON – Beating Seton Catholic Central on the Saints’ home floor Saturday night proved too tall a task for Norwich.
The Saints, buoyed by 6-foot-10 Bob Garbade and aided by 6-foot-7 forward Cole Smothers, sent Norwich to its first loss of the season dominating the the third quarter to establish command of the game.
Garbade had 23 points, 10 of those coming during a decisive third quarter in which Seton outscored Norwich (10-1) 19-7. “They had 10 blocked shots in the game, and every time we got into the paint, if we didn’t get to the foul ine, it seemed like the shot was blocked,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “It was a case of them being a little too big for us inside. We were getting pretty good shots from the outside, we just went cold.”
Norwich, tied with SCC at 22-22 at halftime, scored its only field goal of the third quarter on Dennis Oralls’ shot to make it a 25-24 NHS lead with most of the third quarter to play. The rest of the period, Norwich was outscored 17-4.
After a successful first stanza, one in which Norwich carried a 16-11 lead into the second quarter, the Tornado shot a meager 4-for-21 during the middle two quarters, and finished 15-for-50 from the field for the game.
Oralls canned a trio of three-pointers to lead Norwich with 15 points, and Seth Thomsen added 12. Thomsen, only 6-foot-2, was charged with battling the much bigger Garbade throughout the game. “Seth didn’t come out, and was just a warrior out there,” Abbott said. “When the opponents have guys that are 6-10 and 6-7, and your guys are 6-2 and 6-3, you have your work cut out for you.”
Norwich plays at Windsor on Wednesday, and hosts Horseheads on Friday.

Each Greene player scored their points primarily on layups and inside feeds from dribble penetration. “We couldn’t shoot the ball in the third quarter, and we didn’t shoot it real well in the fourth quarter until the end,” said B-G coach Ben Nelson.

G-MU 39, Milford 30
MILFORD – G-MU turned up the offense in the second half, while also maintaining its typically stingy defense to remain unbeaten on the season.
“We knew they had trouble scoring the ball this season, and we did a pretty solid job there,” said Raiders coach Bill Hartman.
G-MU struggled to 5-for-24 shooting in the first half, yet trailed by only three points. DeMario Reed scored eight in the second half, Jon Scofield netted seven, Andrew Delmar had all six of his points in the second half, and Eddie Ray Cotton was 4-for-4 from the foul line over the final 16 minutes as nearly the entire Raiders’ collective on the floor pitched in during a 27-15 second-half advantage.
Reed and Cotton led with 10 points apiece, and Scofield netted nine. “We’ve found ways to come back, and it’s started on the defensive end,” Hartman said. “As miserable as we shot the ball in the first half, we kept shooting the ball. We got higher percentage looks, and a few more shots fell.”
