B-G/Afton wrestlers eke out win over Greene

B-G/Afton 38, Greene 37
BAINBRIDGE – B-G/Afton coach, Brandon MacNaught, described Wednesday’s home contest as your typical Bears-Trojans meet. “If the final margin was greater than five points, you would think it’s a blowout,” MacNaught said.
B-G/Afton had the match clinched after Paul Parsons’ pin at 160 pounds and Vinnie Buttice’s forfeit win at 171; however, it was Cory Burnett’s stunning pin of Dan Dickman at 140 pounds that swung the balance of the match. Burnett trailed Dickman 1-0 entering the third period. Burnett, who moved up from his usual 135 pounds, executed a takedown in which he brought Dickman to his back. The pin came at 4:56. “That (the pin) was much more than we anticipated,” MacNaught said. “Cory is wrestling really well right now. He beat a quality kid who was a sectional place-winner last year.”
Greene had the early advantage receiving two forfeits and adding wins from Dalton Brower (112) and Braxton Howell (103) to lead 21-3. The Bears responded with veterans Danny Gormley (125), Jesse Griswold (130), Cody Davy (135), and Burnett earning wins.
“We wrestled well and did what we had to do as a team,” MacNaught said. “There is room for improvement, and we gave up more points than we wanted in some spots. Ultimately, it’s about getting your hand raised, and we did enough to do that.”

S-E 39, Camden 36
CAMDEN – Calvin Minkler finished off a takedown with less than three seconds left in overtime to win his 103-pound match, and clinch Sherburne-Earlville’s dual meet win Wednesday night at Camden.
“What a great match, and it was close the whole way,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks. “We had some kids wrestle their butts off. We also had guys that lost by decision to tough kids instead of getting pinned. That saved us points, big time.”
The Marauders (6-6) were able to even their season record, and beat a Class A school to do it. Greg DuVall (152) and Garrett DuVall (171) had pins, Cody Conklin (189) won by injury default, and Cody Santiago (215) claimed a pin as S-E came from 26-12 down to put itself in position for the win.
Camden was penalized two teams points at the end for the final margin. “To be at .500 with the type of schedule we face...this was a good win for us,” Hicks said.
