OXFORD – Playing the first of three games in three days, Oxford rolled past visiting Afton Thursday in a make-up from Tuesday night.
Haley Witchella scored 21 points for Oxford, 17 in the first half as Oxford roared to a 41-8 advantage. The Blackhawks had eight points in the second quarter from reserve Lacey Barry, who finished the night with a varsity-high 16.
“We played the way we hoped to,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer, who said his team committed just eight turnovers in the game. “We wanted to get a lot of people into the the game, and everyone played a decent amount.”
Everyone in the Oxford lineup also found the scoring column. Julie Heggie added 14 points in the win for the Blackhawks, who moved into a tie for fourth in the Midstate Athletic Conference with Sidney. The Blackhawks host the Warriors tonight, then entertain Bainbridge-Guilford Saturday afternoon.
“It’s an important game for us (Friday),” Palmer said. “Step one was tonight, and step two is Friday.”

NEW BERLIN – Bainbridge-Guilford held off UV’s rally in the third quarter, and re-established command of the game with its full-court press in Thursday’s game.
“With about a minute left in the third quarter, we took the lead,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “After that, we just threw the ball away against their press three or four times in a row. All of the sudden, their lead was back to 15 points.”
The Storm battled from nine points down at halftime behind the scoring of Amanda Off, who finished with 22 points. Charlee Weidman added 10.
B-G junior Shania Vandermark scored a game-high 27 points, and proved a difficult inside matchup for the Storm. “She’s really strong in the post, and her teammates made some good entry passes,” Backus said of Vandermark.

Norwich 69, Chenango Forks 29
CHENANGO FORKS – Norwich hammered Chenango Forks early with its full-court press racing to a 30-point halftime lead en route to its fourth straight victory on Thursday night.
The Tornado went 18-for-36 from the field in the first half – including a pair of three balls – to lead 41-11. “They had a lot of trouble with our pressure,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “Even in our halfcourt defense, we forced them into tough shots.”
Every player that suited up for Norwich found the scoring column led by Bryn Loomis’ 17 points. Hannah Runyon added 16. Four other NHS players had at least six markers. “We had a ton of runouts on fast breaks, and I think everyone had a piece of it,” Bennett said, whose club maintains a one-game lead in the STAC Central Division. “Our focus is to win every game ahead of us, and the next one is the most important.”
The Tornado (10-2) host Owego next Friday. This past Tuesday’s home game with Windsor, postponed due to school closing, was rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 31.

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville junior, Cassie Beaver, followed a career-best scoring night with another.
Beaver had 23 points by halftime, and finished with 32 to tie the girls’ varsity school record points originally set by Kelly Cooman. “Cassie has been working hard on her post moves, and it’s been a matter of her getting confidence and realizing she can do this on a consistent basis,” said S-E coach Karen Mulligan. “She was making good moves with her back to the basket, and when she was fouled, she was making her free throws....Cassie doing so well opened up things for other people.”
Caitlynn Adams scored 14 points, had five assists, and pulled down five rebounds. Bridget Irwin narrowly missed her second straight triple-double scoring 10 points, snagging 10 boards, and picking up nine steals. Beaver led S-E’s rebounders with 11.
The Marauders (6-0, 9-2) play at Cooperstown Tuesday.

MARATHON – Oxford clinched a winning record picking up its tenth win of the season Wednesday night at Marathon.
Austin Crandall had an early-match pin at 103 pounds for the Blackhawks, who also received three forfeits. “It’s been a big turnaround for us,” said Oxford coach Craig Tefft, whose club has a 10-7 overall record. “We were winless the past two years because we gave away too many points to forfeits...a winning season has been a team goal of ours from the start.”
Devon DePew (135) had one of three pins for the Blackhawks. Adding a stick for the Blackhawks was Jody Smith at 140 pounds. Smith ended his bout in short order flattening Andrew Sanford in just 42 seconds.
