NORWICH – Several former Norwich swimmers returned to mark the school’s 50th year of swimming Friday night, and this year’s corps of Tornado continued their season-long success winning for the fifth time in six meets.
Norwich won the first four events to build a 12-point lead on the Blue Devils. “The boys were able to come through with a great win, and alumni that were here had a great time,” said Norwich coach Jon Aikins, a former Norwich swimmer himself.
Lucas Follett, Nick Mooney, Curtis Woodard, and Scott Cihocki set the tone for NHS blowing away their nearest rival by 13 seconds in the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay. Follett, Mooney, and Woodard all found the victory column in their own respective individual events as well. Overall, Norwich won nine events, and tied for first in a tenth out of 12 events.
Aikins was especially sentimental noting the appearance of George Echentile, the father of Norwich swimming who began the program during the winter sports season of 1960-1961. Echentile was joined by his wife Betty and daughter Sandy. “Swimming has been a huge part of my life, and I was glad to share this night with my fellow alumni, family, and friends,” Aikins said.
Former NHS swimmers, Bob Bowers (1974) and Scott Mooney (1971), both whom are deceased, were honored during the alumni recognition after the diving competition.
Adding wins for Norwich was Talon Schroeder (200-, 500-yard freestyles). NHS swims at Utica Proctor tonight at 5:30 p.m.
