Favaloro sparks Norwich to win over Horseheads

Norwich 62, Horseheads 47
NORWICH – For more than a quarter and a half, Norwich played as sloppy as it has all season before an unlikely player stepped up and sparked the Tornado to a strong first-half finish.
Senior Josh Favaloro, averaging less than four points a game and known more for his hustling defense, had 12 of his career-high 17 points in the opening half. During a 15-2 run to close the opening half, Favaloro converted a three-point play after a driving layup, and had another steal and layup with 1:31 left in the second stanza as part of an 11-0 spurt to close the first half.
“It was nice to see (Favaloro) score like that, and he’s not usually the guy at the top of the scoring chart,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott. “Tonight was a just reward for all of his hustle. He scored off steals, in transition, and he also hit a couple of threes. His points came at a key time for us.”
Norwich turned the ball over 12 times in the opening half and 25 for the game. Still, it was able to extend the advantage to as many as 21 points early in the fourth quarter.
“With the importance of our upcoming games, we need to take better care of the basketball and be more productive from the free throw line,” Abbott said. “Fortunately, our defense and rebounding remain rock-solid.”
Norwich finished the third quarter in similar fashion to the second scoring six of the last eight points to lead 50-33. Early in the fourth, Seth Thomsen put back an offensive rebound, and Dennis Oralls’ three ball in the left corner boosted the Tornado lead to 55-34.
Jon Foulds, who scored in every quarter for Norwich, added 16 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, and four blocked shots. Thomsen had 15 points and nine caroms, and starting guard Jacob Kelly dished out eight assists. Norwich finished 50 percent from the field (26-for-52), while holding Horseheads to 31.5 percent from the field (18-for-57).
“We’re heading into a big stretch of games against divisional opponents, and all of the teams we beat on the road, are now coming to our place,” Abbott said. “We have a one-game division lead and control our own destiny (for the playoffs). At this point of the season, you can’t ask for anything more than that.”

Sidney 48, Oxford 37
OXFORD – Oxford slumped to 2-for-14 shooting in the second quarter as Sidney was able to grab the lead and extend it through the third quarter.
Dylan Umbra had 18 points for the Warriors, who beat Oxford for the second time this season. Alex Heil canned three treys scoring 14 to provide an able complement to Umbra. “Umbra is tough and doesn’t force stuff. He smooth and confident, a lot like Alex Champlain was for us two years ago,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis.
Andrew Golden had more than half of Oxford’s points finishing with 20 points in the loss. “I think we played better overall than the first time we played them (a 63-38 loss),” Davis said. “We played really hard defense, and I think we tired. We were taking pretty good shots, we just weren’t making them.”

Otselic Valley 56, DeRuyter 37
SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley avenged an early-season loss to DeRuyter Friday night producing one of its best performances of the season.
Jeff Pittsley had a game-high 28 points for the Vikings, who have now won back-to-back games for the first time since starting the season with three straight victories.
“Offensively, we played with some purpose and focus tonight,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We had some dribble penetration and some baskets from easy shots instead of the difficult ones we’ve been taking all year long. If we can keep getting inside the defense and getting decent shots, we’ll put a few more points on the board and be a better basketball team.”
Trevor Marston led OV with 11 rebounds, and Mike Larkin pocketed four steals. The Vikings can avenge another loss on Tuesday when it hosts George Jr. Republic.

G-MU 56, Schenevus 48
SCHENEVUS – Playing against an improved Schenevus club, G-MU bounced back from its first loss to win on the road Friday night.
DeMario Reed had a career-high 28 points – half of the Raiders’ output – netting 18 in the second half to help ward off the host Dragons. “He’s getting stronger and stronger, and more confident as each game concludes,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman of Reed. “He’s not a really big kid, but pound for pound, I don’t think there’s anyone stronger in our league. He’s one tough kid.”
Schenevus closed the game to within three points in the final two minutes. At that point, Hartman switched to a full-court man defense, and Reed was charged with guarding Schenevus’ point guard. “We were able to extend our lead back out,” Hartman said. “’D’ was quicker and equally strong as their point gaurd, He turned him over, got a layup and three-point play.”
Jon Scofield scored 10 for the Raiders (10-1), who host Worcester tonight.

DELHI – Greene didn’t come out ready to play, said Trojans coach Rick Smith, and Delhi jumped out to a double-digit lead, and cruised to a MAC win Friday.
Lucas Cipperly led Delhi with 19 points and Ben Gifford added 16. The Bulldogs’ win stopped Greene’s modest two-game winning streak, and didn’t allow Greene to move over the .500 mark.
“This was a big game for us, we just weren’t able to match Delhi’s energy,” Smith said. “Delhi played well and had constant movement. It was their senior night, and I think that gave them a boost.”
Ryan Borst came off the bench to score 11 points to lead Greene, who play at Windsor on Thursday.

OXFORD – Oxford made it three wins in as many days Saturday afternoon handing Bainbridge-Guilford just its second loss of the season.
Oxford (10-3) extended its winning streak to six games, and is now firmly entrenched among the top four teams in the Midstate Athletic Conference. The top four earn a trip to the league playoffs next month. “I think, with this win, we’re in control of our playoff destiny,” said Blackhawks coach Chris Palmer. “This was a good week for us.”

“Julie and Lacey have started to step up as scorers for us, and both of them averaged over 10 points per game this week,” Palmer said. “Haley still managed 16 under constant pressure. She did a nice job keeping her focus and letting things come to her.”

Miranda Hill had 15 points to lead the Raiders, and Hill’s three-pointer late in the first half gave her team a three-point advantage. Hill had 10 of her points after halftime as well to help extend the lead. “This is a huge win for us because our nearest challenger (in our division), Morris, already lost to Schenevus,” Johnson said.
