Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser this weekend
NORWICH – The Norwich High School Junior Varsity and Varsity Boys Basketball teams won’t be the only ones pitching in for the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser this weekend.
Tonight, the NHS JV and Varsity Girls Basketball teams – in addition to the NHS Varsity Cheerleaders – will hold their own home-game fundraiser, at 6 and 7:45 p.m. respectively. According to NHS Varsity Cheerleading Coach Marie DeSarro, this is simply part of the school’s ongoing effort to raise cancer awareness locally.
“After we put together the ‘Pink Game’ during the October football season, to promote breast cancer awareness, we decided that we wanted to hold another event during basketball season,” said DeSarro. “It worked out really well for us that there was a girls game on Friday and a boys game on Saturday.”
Founded by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches, the Coaches vs. Cancer program brings coaches, teams and communities together in the fight against cancer, added DeSarro. Since its inception in 1993, the program has raised approximately $45 million in funds for cancer research and education, and improved the quality of life for countless cancer patients and their families.
“We’re really excited to bring Coaches vs. Cancer to NHS. I think it’s so important for students to learn about volunteerism and philanthropy at a young age,” said DeSarro. “They’re the future of our community and this teaches them the importance of helping others – that sometimes giving is actually better than receiving.”
The NHS Varsity Cheerleaders – on both nights – will sport custom T-shirts designed by John Blenis of Fine Line Graphics. The shirts feature a special Coaches vs. Cancer logo and will be also be worn by members of both girls basketball teams during warm-ups, reported DeSarro.
Like the pair of boys basketball games on Saturday, donation cans will be placed at several locations around the gymnasium Friday night. In addition, the Norwich Girls Basketball Booster Club will donate half of its 50/50 raffle to the American Cancer Society.
“The Norwich community, the high school community and even the basketball programs at NHS have been hit hard over the past few years, losing some very important people to cancer,” said DeSarro. “But we’ve also seen some inspirational stories and had numerous survivors of the disease.”
There is no cost of admission for the JV and Varsity Girls Basketball games tonight and all admission proceeds from Saturday’s JV and Varsity Boys Basketball games will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
