G-MU's Johnson, Barnes reach milestones
Girls’ Basketball
G-MU 46, Franklin 42
FRANKLIN – G-MU coach Jim Johnson said it was “carbon copy of the other night, only the final score went our way.”
Johnson, in his 32nd season as a varsity girls coach, reached a victory milestone earning his 400th career victory, and senior Tanya Barnes, a four-year player for Johnson, also reached a scoring benchmark topping the 1,000-point barrier.
Barnes’ milestone came at a crucial time as she tossed in a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 44-39 with under a minute to play. Barnes needed 26 points for 1,000, and she scored 28 to match her season-high performance.
“Tanya’s 1,000th point came when we really needed it,” Johnson said, who as usual deflected attention from his own achievement. “Franklin is a tough team, and we not only had to play well to win, we had to come from way back to do it.”
The Raiders clawed back from a six-point deficit to tie the game at 29-29 late in the third quarter. Franklin freshman Jordan Beers, coming off a 31-point night in a win over G-MU Wednesday, swished a 25-footer at the third-quarter buzzer to give her club a three-point cushion.
Early in the fourth, Beers conspired on her own to deny the Raiders an equalizing victory. Early in the fourth, with defenders all around her, Beers hit a three ball to start the fourth, then added a two. In a matter of a few moments, Franklin had a comfortable eight-point lead. “My kids were looking at me after Beers made those shots,” Johnson said. “They asked, ‘what are we supposed to do?’”
Beers cooled off a little, and G-MU’s Barnes had a big role in the turnaround. Barnes had three steals during a 17-2 run turning two of those into buckets. Bri Lambert, who had eight points, put in the go-ahead basket to make it 41-39 to precede Barnes’ three-pointer.
Beers had one more heroic shot – another three – to finish with 24 points on the night. “Franklin is playing as well as any team in our league right now,” Johnson said, who added that improved rebounding was a large factor in the win. “They outrebounded us badly at our place. Tonight, we boxed out well and didn’t let them have extra shots. In the end, I think we wore them down and got some extra shots.”
