Owego 99, Norwich 81
NORWICH – On its senior recognition night, Norwich lost just its second dual meet of the season falling to 5-2 overall against a powerful Owego lineup.
NHS (5-2 overall) did win six of the 12 events, but simply could not match the quality depth of the Indians’ lineup. “It was a tough loss for us, but now we can focus on sectionals,” said Norwich coach Jon Aikins. “We’ve had a great season, and the last two weeks we have been making that final push in yardage to prepare for sectionals. We hope that pays off.”
Norwich senior Lucas Follett had one of his best nights of the season coming up with four total wins. In addition to teaming on two victorious relays, Follett won each of his individual events grabbing the 50-yard freestyle in 23.97, then added a first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.70).
Talon Schroeder was also on each winning relay, and added a third first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.51). The Tornado’s Scott Mooney notched a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke clocking 1:11.09.

Wrestling

Waverly 37, Oxford 31
WAVERLY – A couple of holes in its lineup were too much for Oxford to overcome, who lost a narrow final to Waverly in the quarterfinals of the Section IV Dual Meet Tournament.
In matches that were actually contested, the Blackhawks had the better of the Wolverines, a perennial contender among Section IV teams. “I can’t be disappointed,” said Oxford coach Craig Tefft. “We did almost everything we needed to do. We just needed one more thing to fall into place, and we would have done it.”
Oxford started quickly winning the first six matches to score all of its points and build a 31-0 lead. Waverly accepted three straight forfeits at 119, 125, and 130 pounds to get back into the match, and Ryan Wolcott’s narrow 1-0 win over Devin Depew – who was moving up to 135 pounds for Oxford – kept the momentum going for the winning team. “There were some calls (in Devin’s match) they were thought were takedowns for us,” Tefft said. “If we win that match, the final score is probably 34-34, and we win the dual in a tiebreaker.”
Clayton Audette (160) won a decision for Oxford to begin the victory parade. Joe Jackson (171) and Caleb Cutting (189) had first-period pins, each of whom was moving up in weight. Joe Nelson (96) started the lightweights with a major decision at 96 pounds, while Austin Crandall (103) and Jeremiah Winter (112) picked up first-period pins.
Tefft lauded Audette and Depew, the Blackhawks’ only seniors this season. “Those two have been the backbone of our program the last five years, and have held the team together when we had low numbers,” the Oxford coach said. “It’s kind of sad. The numbers are picking up for us, and those two will no longer be with the program.”
Oxford hosts Unatego Tuesday.

Greene 59, Norwich 30
CHENANGO FORKS – Greene defeated Norwich for the second time this season to win its first-round match in the Section IV dual meet tournament, Saturday at Chenango Forks.
The Trojans, who advanced to the finals of the tournament only to lose to defending champion Chenango Forks, accepted six forfeits (30 points) from the undermanned Tornado.
“We have a lot of holes with guys sitting out due to injury, but we’re gearing up for the class tournament and sectionals, and we didn’t want to hurt people any more,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “We’re a little beat up right now.”
On the bright side, Norwich’s winners on the mat – Tristan Rifanburg (119), Frankie Garcia (130), and Landon Cummings (96) won by pin. “The guys that won for us, they were looking in tip-top form,” Downey said. “Landon is wrestling well and is being more aggressive. He looks like he has some confidence.”

Greene 39, B-G/Afton 38
CHENANGO FORKS – In the Section IV dual meet semifinals Saturday, Greene avenged a one-point loss to B-G/Afton earlier in the week dealing the top-seeded Bears their first loss of the season.
The Trojans, down 38-36, received a 12-7 decision win from Braxton Howell at 112 pounds to eke out the one-point win.
The match was littered with multiple forfeits with Greene receiving three and B-G/Afton taking two.

Indoor Track and Field

Woodford sets new Section IV record
ITHACA – Oxford’s Katie Woodford, running for B-G/Afton’s track team, beat nemesis Lindsay Seymour of Elmira in the 300-meter dash Friday night at the Hurley-Quinney Meet, and established a new Section IV record.
Seymour set the record earlier this month before Woodford shattered the record by six-tenths of a second. Woodford’s time of 40.74 was also .81 of a second faster than Seymour’s finishing time. “To run that time on Cornell’s track, that is just outstanding,” said B-G/Afton coach Robb Munro. “She was smooth and efficient. I think it was shocking for Lindsey, who has always let Katie kind of go at the start, then came on at the end. The last 100 or 120 meters, you could see Katie speed up, and she was not getting caught.”
B-G/A’s 1,600-meter relay team of Woodford her twin sister Emily, Julia Knapp, and Isamarie Ramos easily claimed a first in 4:24.70. The time was that much more impressive because of Cornell’s sharper turns and smaller oval.
Emily Woodford added a career-best 36-feet, 1 3/4-inch leap in the triple jump to place second overall.

Noelle pads indoor season accomplishments
NEW YORK – Greene senior Chad Noelle, a two-time state track and field champion last spring, added to his decorated indoor track and field season Friday night winning the prestigious high school boys Millrose mile at Madison Square Garden.
Noelle was matched with some of the best milers in the country on a short track in which it took 11 1/2 laps to complete the race. Noelle finished in 4:16.71, slower than his 4:11.64 qualifying team last week at the New Balance Games, but a more impressive result due to the number of turns, said Robb Munro, who coaches Noelle on the B-G/Afton indoor team.
Noelle, who signed a scholarship offer from the University of Oregon, held off fellow Oregon recruit, Matt Jablonski of Towson, Maryland winning by 17 hundreths of a second.
This indoor season, Noelle established the best 1,600 and 3,200-meter scholastic times in the country, and his 3,200-meter time of 9:20.48 broke a 28-year-old Section IV record as he lowered the previous mark by over 4 1/2 seconds.

Bowling

S-E boys, girls split with Waterville
EARLVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville’s boys pushed their record to 10-1 on the season taking a 4-1 win over Waterville Friday afternoon.
The Marauders’ boys totaled 2,523 pins as Chad Potter rolled a 223 high game.
On the girls’ side, S-E dropped a 4-1 final. Kiamesha Philhower rolled a 580 series to lead S-E and all bowlers.
