Norwich Y opens After School Program in Greene
GREENE – The number of After School Programs operated by the Norwich Family YMCA will increase to three as of today, when it opens a program at the Greene Central School District.
“We are excited to welcome the YMCA to Greene,” said the district’s superintendent, Jonathan Retz. “This will be a valuable service to many of our families.”
YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen said he was pleased with the support they have received from both the community and the district so far.
“The Norwich Family YMCA is excited to be offering an additional childcare option to local families in Greene,” he said.
According to YMCA Youth and Family Director Bonnie Tiffany, the Y was prompted to create the after school program after the closure of Greene Cares. The non-profit program, which provided after-school care to students for 26 years, closed in late December because of financial reasons.
Even though parents had more than six months’ notice, some were still left in a lurch by the program’s demise. Now, however, the Y is stepping up to fill that void.
“We’ve been working closely with the district and the Office of Children and Family Services,” reported Tiffany, referring to the state agency responsible for licensing child care facilities.
According to Tiffany, the site has been licensed to accommodate 65 students. Kim Pickard will serve as the site director, and Brendan Kinne as her assistant. She anticipates adding a third position once enrollment begins to grow, she said.
The school age program will serve Greene students in Kindergarten through sixth grade, and operate from the time of dismissal to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday while school is in session.
Primary and Intermediate School students will be bussed to the High School for the program, which will utilize the school cafeteria as well as the gym and outside play area. A nutritious snack is provided each day. Eventually, Tiffany said, they also hope to expand the license to include the pool so kids can swim once a week.
The cost is $90 per child per month, which Tiffany said is consistent with the Y’s after school programs at its Norwich facility and at the Oxford Primary School.
According to Tiffany, anyone interested in registering their child for the Greene after school program can do so by coming to the Y or contacting her at 336-9622, ext. 28.
“All rates and child information forms are also on the website,” she added.
