Oxford Family Sledding Night, Angela’s Angels fundraiser tonight

OXFORD – There will be shrieks of delight echoing from Blackhawk Stadium tonight as scores of families take part in what has become an Oxford tradition: Family Sledding Night.

The free family-friendly event, organized by the Oxford Primary School Shared Decision Making Team, will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. tonight at the football field. The actually sledding will take place not on the field itself, of course, but on the hill behind it.

The annual event has proved to be a fun way of bringing the school community closer together, but this year, it will have even deeper meaning for many, for it will also serve as a fundraiser for Angela’s Angels. As such, all proceeds from the sale of food and beverages at the event will be donated to Bassett Healthcare’s The Simon Fund in memory of Angela Hailey-Gregory.

Gregory, a wife and mother of two, was an active member of the school community, serving on the shared decision making teams at both the primary and middle schools. In August of 2009, Gregory lost her battle with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare liver cancer. She was 39.

“She was a remarkable and vibrant woman, and made a lasting impact on so many people,” said Oxford School Board Member Joe Spence, a close friend of the Gregory family.

Two of those who Gregory had an impact on are Spence’s daughter Marianna and her own daughter Audrey Claire. The two second-graders are the driving force behind Angela’s Angels.
