Big second half keys G-MU's win over Vikings

COPES CORNERS – G-MU surged in the third period to take control of its game with Otselic Valley Friday night and earn its 13th win of the season.
Trailing the Vikings by a point entering the last quarter, G-MU inverted its zone moving three people across the top. OV failed to produce much consistency on offense, and the Raiders had five players score in a 20-8 period. Demario Reed scored seven points in the third quarter, and Chris Steckline had seven points off the bench in the second half as G-MU cruised.
“I hope this contributes to our confidence as we move into praictice before sectionals,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “The kids passed it well and we had better movement offensively in the second half. Life is always easier when you’re able to do that.”
Eddie Ray Cotton scored 12 points to lead G-MU, and Reed added 11.
Jeff Pittsley scored 13 points to pace the Vikings.

MOHAWK – Playing on the road, Sherburne-Earlville, led by Randy Briggs, could not have started its contest Friday with Mohawk any better.
Briggs scored 14 points in the opening period as the Marauders raced to a 21-2 advantage. “We played outstanding defense in the first quarter,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “Murphy (Carson), their point guard, they run a lot of screen-and-roll with him. We did a great job keeping him from getting to the basket.”
Briggs was also the primary defender on Murphy in the opening quarter. S-E scored most of its early baskets in transition, and dominated the defensive boards to iimprove to 7-1 in Center State Conference play (10-5 overall).
Cameron Yerton added 13 points for S-E, who hosts Mohawk tonight.

Adams had 21 points and three steals, irwin finished with 19 points, seven steals, five assists, and three blocks, and Beaver had 16 points and seven rebounds. The Marauders had nine three-pointers making 9 of 17 attempts.
S-E holds a one-game lead in Center State Conference play, and can clinch its second straight Division Two title Thursday night at Waterville.

Norwich’s Kevin Rooney and Darrel Humphrey paced the Tornado as each finished with a 608 series. Rooney, whose season average of 209.12 was 11th in Section IV, earned a trip to the Section IV State Qualifier on Feb. 19.
