Oxford marks Worl Day of Prayer Friday
OXFORD – The Church Women United (CWU) of Oxford and the World Day of Prayer USA Committee have collaborated to present a World Day of Prayer, at the New York State Veterans’ Home, in the recreation room, this Friday at 1:30 p.m. All are invited to this very special service with a Chilean theme. There will be stories to teach about the women of Chile, slides, music and singing. Complimentary refreshments will be provided by the Veterans’ Home.
This is the largest ecumenical movement in the world organized and led by women, which started in the USA in 1884. Around the globe, more than 3 million women, men and children, in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer on March 4. This year, the service in Oxford will be sponsored by the women of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, under the direction of Grace DeBrita, CWU president. Men and women from the community are encouraged to join in with the veterans, in this joyous event, at the beautiful new facility.
CWU participants will include Grace DeBrita, Cathy Rood (music), Sue Hubbard (slides), Joyce Ardron, Phyllis Ives, Helena Ryan, Pat Marks, Carol Delaney, Joan Kulina, Cathy McKenzie, Marian Godfrey, June Burroughs, Carol Russell, Bernice Gere, and others. Their aim is to demonstrate that prayer and action are inseparable and that both have immeasurable influence in the world.
The program, an ecumenical celebration of informed prayer, has the theme, “How many loaves have you?” chosen by the women of Chile. In this past year, Chile has been challenged by a devastating earthquake and the collapse of a mine in which many miners were trapped. Although rich in resources like copper, the people of Chile have often suffered from poverty and hunger. Many of the country’s natural resources have been compromised – land and water laid waste.
On Friday March 4, the women of Chile invite us to join with them in an opening procession, carrying a “panera,” the name that Chileans give to their everyday bread basket. Bread is central to their daily life and sharing bread is a universal sign of hospitality.
World Day of Prayer (WDP) is an international event that unites Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women and men in over 170 countries around the world. Each year they come together on the first Friday of March to observe a common day of prayer. Throughout the day, from the first sunrise in Tonga, to the last sunset in Western Samoa, prayers follow the sun’s path around the globe. Spoken in hundreds of languages and dialects, WDP strives to bring “informed prayer and prayerful action” to our communities.
The Church Women United (CWU) of Oxford have representatives from several Oxford churches including St. Joseph’s, St. Paul’s, United Methodist, and the United Church of Oxford.
