Sherburne’s St. Paddy’s Day parade celebrates 10th anniversary
SHERBURNE – Representatives from about 50 organizations will march in Sherburne’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday, including three bagpipe groups, three Irish dance groups and a special float commemorating the parade’s 10th anniversary.
The float will carry 2011 Grand Marshall Lloyd Baker and the parade’s past nine Grand Marshals.
A last-minute fundraiser will be held from 4 to 8 tonight at Gilligan’s Island, North Main Street, Sherburne. All proceeds will be used to offset cost of the parade.
The action is set to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at the corner of West State Street and North Main Street in the village. Marchers and floats will proceed north to the former cotton mill parking lot. Groups are welcome to join in the festivities by calling Theresa Mastro at 674-4573.
The parade originally began in the 1970s with Denny O’Connor marching up North Main St. from the Sherburne Inn, beating his drum and leading walkers to Lewis’ Restaurant. After O’Connor’s passing, the marchers stopped until 2001 when Betty McDaniel organized approximately 80 individuals to march up North Main carrying banners and flags. Twenty-one groups participated the following year, and the parade goes on today.
