Firefighters battle cabin blaze

COLUMBUS – Sherburne firefighters responded to a 9:48 a.m. 911 emergency call reporting a cabin fire at Sears Pond Road in the Town of Columbus Friday morning. According to Sherburne Fire Department Second Assistant Fire Chief Vern Palmiter, first responders reported flames along the entire roofline of the structure, which was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Back-up was provided by the Hamilton, New Berlin, Smyrna and North Norwich Fire Departments, while the Norwich Fire Department covered the Sherburne station. Palmiter said the fire was particularly difficult to extinguish due to Friday morning’s strong winds and the fire’s location between the ceiling and roof of the structure.
