6 On The Square presents nature artist Charity Gipp

OXFORD – 6 On The Square (6OTS) announces the opening of an exhibit of nature paintings by local artist Charity Gipp. The gallery of unique tempera art, depicting everything from eastern butterflies to underwater seahorses, will run from March 8 through May 1, with an Opening Reception on Friday, March 11, from 5 - 7 p.m..
Charity Gipp was born in Oswego in 1984. She received a Bachelors of Fine Art in 2004 and a Masters in the Art of Teaching in 2006, from Oswego State University in New York. “Speechless over the area beauty,” Charity, and husband Jeff, moved to Chenango County in 2008. She accepted the position as Oxford Academy’s middle school art instructor to help young students gain an understanding and appreciation for art, and help each student achieve to the best of their ability.
Charity has shown work at SUNY Oswego, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Albany, and the Jericho Art Council in Bainbridge, NY.
Her latest works of art are inspired by nature. These paintings focus on the often unseen and unnoticed creatures and plants that inhabit our surroundings. The colors and textures found in nature are reflected in the style used.
Charity uses a centuries old painting medium in a non-traditional technique. Tempera, the same paint used by early Egyptians and in illuminated manuscripts from classical times, is her paint of choice. This permanent, fast drying medium, allows Gipp to build-up individual, semi-opaque layers of colors. In this specific technique, each colored layer is its own painting of the subject. After several layers are painted, Charity then washes the piece, thus destroying most of the image, creating the desired random texture. After this, Charity reconstructs the painting, leaving parts of the under layers exposed which give the art an almost distressed appearance.
This artwork creates a parallel to nature because the viewer only sees a fraction of the whole picture. Just like the subjects in the paintings there are many unseen stages which lead up to the final result. Charity’s paintings show the complexities and beauty that are often overlooked around us.
Come and meet the artist at the Opening Reception, Friday, March 11, from 5 - 7 p.m.; all are welcome. The exhibit can also be viewed at 6OTS one-hour before and during performances.
