Oxford teen charged with arson after he calls police to report fire

OXFORD – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office charged a 16-year-old Oxford resident with felony arson Friday after he allegedly told officers he was the victim of the crime.
Deputies charged 16-year-old Austin R. Demuth of New Virginia Road, with fourth degree arson, an E class felony, second degree aggravated harassment and providing a false written statement to police.
Police said they began investigating the arson complaint March 5 after Demuth contacted the sheriff’s office and claimed another person had entered his property and set fire to his snowmobile. The fire also damaged a nearby car.
“The investigation revealed that Demuth intentionally set the fire himself,” stated the sheriff’s Office.
Demuth was released and will appear in Town of Oxford Court March 21. The Oxford Fire Department and Chenango County Arson Investigation Team also assisted police in the investigation.
