Chase gardeners get spring fever

NEW BERLIN – For more than ten years, residents, staff and volunteers at Chase Memorial Nursing Home have been coming together each week to share their gardening interests.
For Chase staff member and horticulturist Annette MacLeod, this time of the year can be the most exciting as the cold winter months grudgingly give way to the spring thaw and a new growing season.
Despite the cold weather, MacLeod and more than a dozen members of Chase’s Can You Dig It gardening club have met each week in the home’s sunroom where they care for a large variety of inside plants and prepare for nicer weather.
Last week, the group welcomed guests from Broome Developmental Center in Binghamton. The gardening club meets every Thursday afternoon and is open to all residents, volunteers or anyone else wishing to participate.
Last week the two organizations joined together to began the annual spring seed planting. The soil and seeds will be cared for until the fledgling plants grow large enough to be set in Chase’s backyard garden or greenhouse. The club grows a number of vegetables and flowering plants, and they collect flowers, seeds and produce to be used in meals, sold at fundraisers or simply enjoyed by the home’s residents.
The gardening club is one of Chase’s innovative Life Focus Programs, which place residents in interactive and vibrant surroundings. Much of the planted life cared for in the program adorns the home’s halls and living spaces as well as an outdoor garden area.
“Folks just really enjoy it. Gardening is something a lot of residents enjoyed long before they came here. It’s a chance to do something people have always loved to do and there’s no reason they still can’t keep doing it,” said MacLeod.
