It’s Team Purple versus Team White as students and teachers at NHS kick-off Spirit Week today with the first of five theme days – Sports Day.
The week-long competition for school-wide bragging rights pits NHS seniors and freshmen, aka the Purple Team, versus the school’s sophomores and juniors, otherwise known as the White Team. It’s an annual school tradition that features daily trivia contests, the popular Talent Show and Pep Rally and – ultimately – Spirit Night, where the winning team will be announced.
Other theme days this week will include Twin Day Tuesday, Wednesday Hat Day, Celebrity Look-alike Day on Thursday and – of course – Team Color Day on Friday. Spirit Points will be awarded throughout the week for team participation and creativity. Points will also be awarded following the Spirit Week Talent Show – to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the auditorium – and Spirit Night, held at 7 p.m. on Friday in the gymnasium.
Admission for Thursday’s Talent Show is $2 and it’s open to the public.
“Spirit Week is what I would call the Student Government Organization’s big thing of the year and our goal is to get as many students involved as possible,” said SGO advisor Richard Turnbull. “It’s a great way to get the kids working together and it’s very student-oriented.”
Teachers are also encouraged to get into the act, added Turnbull, especially during Friday afternoon’s Pep Rally and teacher competitions.
SGO Secretary and NHS senior Josh Favaloro said he’s always enjoyed Spirit Week because it’s a time when students, no matter their class, come together – freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors alike.
The end result, however, is a no-brainer, according to the senior.
“I’m predicting a big victory for the Purple,” said Favaloro, who added it’s “not a close match-up at all.”
Member of the White Team and NHS junior Bryn Loomis disagreed and said she believed the White Team has just as good a shot this year, although last year ended with a victory for the seniors and freshmen of the Purple Team.
