United Way announces 2011 allocations
NORWICH – The Chenango United Way has announced its 2011 Community Impact Allocations, with a total of $355,422 going out to a number of organizations, programs and agencies.
A group of 28 community volunteers reviewed each of the 24 applications, and approved funding to all but three, according to Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco.
In 2011, the United Way remained nationally focused on three areas: income, education and health. Locally, access to healthcare, opportunities for children and youth, an aging population and financial stability and self-sufficiency remained specific areas of focus.
The United Way of America will assess how local United Ways have progressed toward those national goals in 2018, added Monaco.
Approximately 52 percent of 2011 campaign funds – or $183,051 – were allocated to the educational focus area, with moneys distributed to Catholic Charities of Chenango, The Place, the PAL Center, the Oxford Youth Center and the Youth Philanthropy Council.
The income focus area received the next largest percentage – $96,936 – awarded to Opportunities for Chenango, Catholic Charities Roots and Wings, the Supplemental Security Income Project and funding for the Chenango County Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen.
The health focus area received approximately 21 percent – or $75,435 – in funding, distributed to Housing for Chenango, Planned Parenthood, Opportunities for Chenango, Catholic Charities and the Norwich Family YMCA’s Unemployment Membership Program.
“Agencies are requesting so much more than we’ve been able to raise, especially with state and federal budget cuts,” said Monaco. “It’s becoming really critical that we continue to have increases to our annual campaign.”
The Chenango United Way will began preparations for its 2012 campaign in July. For more information, contact the United Way at 334-8815 or visit www.chenangouw.org.
