Man turns over stolen handgun and sheriff arrests suspected burglar

SHERBURNE – A burglary suspect was arrested last week after a concerned citizen told police he’d been given a handgun he believed to be stolen.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office charged 25-year-old Michael J. Mathis of Smyrna with second degree burglary, fourth degree grand larceny and third degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies.

Lt. Richard Cobb said the crime took place between Aug. 1 and Aug. 9.

He said the victim of the crime was unaware his firearm had been stolen until a number of days later, when he went to retrieve it.

“There were no signs of forced entry detected and the defendant appears to have entered the home with the purpose of illegally procuring a weapon and nothing else was reported stolen,” said Cobb. He added that Mathis did not have a pistol permit.
