Smyrna man charged with molesting 4-year-old
SMYRNA – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 24-year-old Smyrna man on March 17, claiming he molested a 4-year-old child placed under his care.
Investigators said Tommy Lee Kessinger Sr. was arraigned on the charges in Guilford Town Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond. Police said the charges involved Kessinger having “sexual contact with a 4-year-old he was baby-sitting,” in the Village of Smyrna.
Kessinger is charged with first degree sexual abuse, a D class felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.
District Attorney Joseph McBride said the defendant waived his right to a felony hearing in Village of Smyrna Court and has been incarcerated since his arrest.
McBride said his office intends to present the case to a Chenango County grand jury later this month, which could involve additional charges being filed.
Lt. Richard Cobb said the defendant and alleged victim were not related and that other children had also been left under the care of the defendant. He couldn’t confirm if any other children were present when the alleged abuse took place.
