Sheriff, DSS charged three with felony welfare fraud
GUILFORD – Chenango County authorities have accused a Guilford couple of stealing $14,596.33 in unemployment benefits.
Elizabeth and Peter Thek were arrested for stealing the money following an investigation by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Social Services Fraud Investigation Unit.
The Sheriff’s Office said the couple continued to collected medical and food assistance they were not entitled to from the Department of Social Services without reporting that Peter Thek was receiving unemployment benefits.
Police arrested the couple April 13 and charged them with third degree welfare fraud and first degree offering a false instrument for filing, both felonies.
They were issued appearance tickets for Guilford Town Court and released.
In an unrelated case, the two agencies also charged Annette L. Densmore, 39, of Norwich with fourth degree welfare fraud, also a felony, two days later on April 15.
The sheriff reported Densmore received $1,067 in benefits she was not entitled to when she failed to report she was receiving other unemployment benefits. She was also released and will appear in Guilford Town Court at a later date.
