Norwich extends unbeaten streak to five games

Norwich 12, Chenango Forks 4
NORWICH – Norwich extended its unbeaten streak to five games taking command of Thursday’s game against Chenango Forks in the third inning.
The Tornado (4-1-1) scored five times in the third to grab a 6-2 lead, then tacked on a pair of three-run frames over the next two innings. “It was cold out today, but our bats were warm,” said Norwich coach John Martison. “We played relaxed and confident. This was a good league win.”
Nick McCullough and Brendan McInerney, the one and two hitters for Norwich, consistently reached base with each drawing a pair of walks. Number three hitter, Colby Griffin, finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Cleanup hitter, Mackay Hotaling, was a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. “We had guys on base all game and we were hitting hit hard,” Martinson said. “Our top two guys in the lineup were getting on base, and our three and four hitters came through.”
Hotaling also picked up the victory pitching a complete game.
Norwich plays at Windsor Monday.

Harpursville 14, Oxford 3
HARPURSVILLE – Harpursville’s first five batters in the second inning reached safely – three on errors – and all five scored as part of a seven-run inning to bust open Thursday’s game.
Mason Dean went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a two-run double in the second inning. Oxford finished with nine errors in the game. “We looked like a team that hadn’t played in two weeks,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “The big difference in the game was the error column. We made nine errors, and they only made one.”
Eric Dilfer had an RBI double in the seventh for Oxford, and he scored on a Nick Wakefield single.
The Blackhawks play at Walton today at 2 p.m.

Sidney 10, Unadilla Valley 2
NEW BERLIN – Sidney pitcher Andy Kozak confounded UV’s bats, and helped himself at the plate with three hits in Thursday’s road victory.
Kozak, and little brother Billy Kozak, each went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. On the mound, Andy Kozak struck out 12 and walked two in a complete-game win.
“Kozak throws hard, it was a cold night...he looked real good tonight and we had a lot of trouble catching up to him,” said UV coach Tom Locke.
Each team struggled in the field combining for 11 total errors, and most of the errors were throwing, Locke said.
Brett Smith and Zach Montgomery had RBIs for UV, who play Walton on Monday.

SHERBURNE – Carter Cole had the biggest hitting game of his varsity career Thursday night, and pitcher Mike Wilson was dominant in five-plus innings as Sherburne-Earlville won its third game of the season.
Cole finished 3-for-4 with five RBI, and he lashed a three-run homer in the fourth to key a nine-run outburst by the Marauders. Wilson had 12 strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings pitched to earn the victory. Wilson and Jake Bohnert also contributed two hits.
“This was the best we’ve hit all season, and we also had a couple of nice sacrifice bunts and a sacrifice fly,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks.
S-E (3-2) hosts a doubleheader against Sidney on Saturday.

Softball

Unadilla Valley 5, Sidney 0
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley eliminated the errors that plagued it in its first two games, and Storm pitcher Maggie Avolio pitched her first career shutout Thursday afternoon.
Avolio scattered five Sidney hits striking out 10 and walking one. UV was charged with 16 errors in its first two games, but played error-free softball last night. “We were just able to get outside and practice on a field,” said UV coach Eileen Lawyer. “Our first two games were our first times outside.”
Charlee Weidman and Hannah Benson scored insurance runs in the fourth coming home on well-placed sacrifice bunts by Lauren Peck and Brittany Fairchild. Weidman also had an RBI in the contest. “Maggie has pitched well all season, we’ve just been messy defensively until tonight,” Lawyer said.
UV (1-2) hosts Walton Monday.

Oxford 7, Harpursville 4
HARPURSVILLE – After a long layoff, Oxford was overcame six errors in the field Thursday to win for the second time in as many outings.
Jackie Heggie picked up the victory allowing four runs and six hits. Julie Heggie was the lone Oxford hitter with two hits, and she added three RBI.
The Blackhawks broke a 2-2 tie scoring three times in the fourth with two outs. Teresa Morrison singled, Lacey Barry reached on an error, and Julie Heggie had an RBI single. Barry and Heggie would come around to score in the inning.
The Blackhawks (2-0) play at Walton today.

OXFORD – Oxford’s golf team fell for the second time in three matches this week losing at home to Cincinnatus Thursday.
Cincy’s Troy Halstrom shot a 40 over the par-34 front nine at Bluestone Golf Course to earn medalist honors.
Chris Marks had a 43 to pace Oxford (1-2).

Track and Field

DELHI – B-G/Afton easily swept the boys’ and girls’ teams scoring in a four-way track and field meet hosted by Delhi Wednesday afternoon.
For the girls, B-G/A’s Ariana Hall broke the school record in the 100-meter hurdles timing 16.9 seconds. Her record surpassed the previous mark of 17.1 seconds held by Kristy Cummings (1995) and Amy Olin (2006). The Bears’ Julia Knapp also tied the school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.7 seconds. Knapp placed second in the event behind Oxford senior standout Katie Woodford (12.0).
The Blackhawks’ 400-meter relay team of Woodford, Emily Woodford, Haley Witchella, and Jessica Russo established a new season-low time winning in 50.4 seconds.

Owego Invitational
OWEGO – Norwich’s boys and Oxford’s girls each placed third in team scoring at the Owego Invitational Thursday.
Norwich’s Jon Foulds had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles; the Tornado’s 400- and 1,600-meter relays also wound up second; and junior long jumper, Patrick Taylor, added a third.
Oxford had seven top-three finishes to push it near the top of the field. Katie Woodford was a close second in the 100- and 400-meter dashes; Emily Woodford was a runner-up in the 200-meter dash and long jump; Haley Witchella placed third in the shot put; while the Blackhawks’ 400- and 1,600-meter relays ran second.

G-MU/Morris boys and girls sweep
COPES CORNERS – In its second home meet of the season, G-MU/Morris easily outpaced visiting Downsville and Franklin in a three-way meet Thursday afternoon.
GMU/M’s boys scoring 81 points with Downsville scoring 32 and Franklin 15. On the girls’ side, the host club had 98 points, Franklin scored 41, and Downsville 11.
Eddie Ray Cotton, Greg Delaney, Chris Steckline, and Skylar Maricle all had two individual wins apiece for the G-MU/M boys.
On the girls’ side, Cassie Swarzhans, Kali Murphy, Charlotte Rozanski, and Emily Leboffe picked up two individual wins each.
Times and results of the meet will appear in Monday’s Evening Sun.
