Local historians receive awards in Elmira
ELMIRA – On April 4, three historians from Chenango County were recognized by the Association of Public Historians of New York State (APHNYS) at their annual three day conference held in Elmira. Attending were Chenango County Historian Pat Evans, New Berlin/Columbus registered historian Barb Avery, Henry Drexler past Chenango County deputy historian, Tom Gray, Guilford Town Historian and wife his Wilma.
The 2011 conference, held at the Holiday Inn Riverside, was attended by County and Township historians from all over New York State and hosted by APHNYS Region 10-The Southern Tier.
At the Annual Awards Banquet, Thomas Gray, Town of Guilford Historian received the Edmund J. Winslow Award for Excellence. This award named in memory of Mr. Winslow, Senior Historian of the New York State Museum 1968-1990, is given to a local government historian in recognition for excellence for one or more public history projects and/or publications. The APHNYS/New York State Museum sponsored award was presented to Thomas Gray by Gerald Smith, Binghamton Historian and newly appointed APHNYS president. Tom also received in the mail, after the conference a Certificate of Merit and recognition by the New York State Assembly from Assemblyman Clifford Crouch.
Patricia Evans and Rose Wellman, Town of Sherburne Historian (absent) received certificates and recognition as newly appointed registered historians. This recognition being well deserved as the process to apply is very involved and requires course work and validated experience.
