New program director at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chenango County

NORWICH – Mark Parsons has been announced as the new program director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chenango County.
While Parsons – a Norwich High School graduate – has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Binghamton University, it’s working with the area’s youth population that truly inspires him. According to the former substitute teacher and soccer coach, connecting with those children during that time was instrumental in solidifying his current direction in life.
“I’m very excited about it and I’ve worked with young people in The Place’s Summer Program in the past, which really connected with me,” said Parsons. “I’ve really enjoyed my time working with the youth of the local community in so many different areas.”
Karen Sastri, president of the Board of Directors at The Place, said Parsons had recently volunteered for the annual Bowl For Kids Sake, held March 26. Soon afterward, she added, he was offered the position of program director.
“That’s actually how we met Mark,” laughed Sastri. “We’re excited to have him. It’s great to have someone that’s been involved with our programs as a youth and someone that was interested enough to come back, volunteer and end up in this position.”
Sastri said it’s also an opportunity for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program itself, by bringing in a new director who has a number of new ideas. In the coming months, both Sastri and Parsons are looking forward to expanding the program and the services it offers. Parsons said the plan is to extend a helping hand to neighboring communities, such as Chenango County’s outlying areas and Broome County.
“It’s really exciting for me, it’s a large area and it’s a big opportunity to reach out and help a lot of kids,” he added.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Chenango County is always looking for volunteers and mentors, said Parsons, and those looking to dedicate a few hours of their time can have an immediate and long-lasting impact. In addition, the program is currently looking for help identifying youths who could benefit from having an adult mentor.
