JC beats Norwich in division showdown
Baseball
Johnson City 4, Norwich 1
JOHNSON CITY – Norwich went from a half-game lead in the STAC Central Division to trailing the Wildcats by half a game after Monday’s showdown.
Johnson City answered Norwich’s run in the top of the sixth with all four of its runs. “Other than that one inning, it was a well pitched game on both sides,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “Their pitcher had a nice fastball and dropped in a curve. It was a breakout inning for both teams, and (Johnson City) was able to move runners around.”
Nick McCullough singled and stole second in the top of the sixth. He scored Norwich’s lone run on a Colby Griffin single.

SHERBURNE – Cooperstown opened the game with five runs in the first, and the offense did not cease for the Redskins in a lopsided win over the Marauders Monday.
Kevin Huggins went 3-for-4 for Cooperstown with four runs scored and two RBI. Cooperstown finished with 18 hits against an S-E team that was coming off back-to-back wins last weekend.
“Every kid in their starting lineup had a hit, and our five errors probably led to nine unearned runs,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “This time of the year, you can’t have that. We just didn’t play well.”
Carter Cole finished with two hits for S-E, who play at Canastota today.

COPES CORNERS – It was a rough home opener for G-MU Monday afternoon, who played their first seven games this season on the road.
Edmeston pitcher Zak Ruffles overpowered the Raiders’ hitters finishing with 14 strikeouts. Nate Truax added two hits and four RBI to the Edmeston offense.
“We didn’t play the best defense behind our starting pitcher (Andrew Delmar), and that made it tough for him to pitch,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “I tell the guys that if you put the ball in play, good things will happen. They did that, and we did not put the ball in play with the exception of one inning.”
Derek Rowlands and Blake Pavelka added two hits for the Panthers.

JOHNSON CITY – Norwich (1-10) played its second error-free game over the past three, and if not for a standout defensive play by Johnson City, may have picked up its first STAC win this season.
Norwich’s Jamie Berger singled in the sixth and moved to third after a passed ball and a groundout. Norwich batter Molly Moore roped a line drive to centerfield that looked like a surefire basehit. Dani Faber made a diving catch for the Wildcats to preserve the one-run lead.
Berger tossed her best game of the season allowing one walk and one hit, while striking out five. The walk and basehit both occurred in the third inning with Hannah Secord delivering the timely RBI single.
“Jamie pitched a great game, and this is one of those games that pains us to not get the win,” said Norwich coach Dennis Eaton. “Our girls played aggressively, and it was just a couple of plays here and there that could have gone either way.”
Saturday, Norwich earned its first win of the season beating Whitney Point, 9-4, in the consolation game of the Greene Tournament. Shelby Condon went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Megan McAvoy, Logan Thompson, Berger, and Moore all added two hits in the victory. McAvoy added three runs scored and one RBI.

Cooperstown 4, S-E 2
SHERBURNE – Cooperstown needed a four-run fifth inning to surge past the improving Marauders in Monday’s night’s Center State Conference game.
All four of the Redskins’ runs came in with two outs. Maggie Hall highlighted the uprising with a three-run homer to give her team the two-run advantage.
S-E’s Cori Bergeron allowed just two hits finishing with four strikeouts and five walks. “Cori threw an awesome game, and it’s incredible to watch how much we have improved,” said S-E coach Michelle Parker, whose club was beaten handily by Cooperstown earlier this season. “My girls are playing so well, and our pitching staff complements each other well.”
The Marauders scored their runs in the top of the first, and held the lead for a good portion of the game. Brandi Harmon walked and Bergeron singles. Chelsia Beudoin hit a single to score both baserunners.
