Oxford American Legion hosts benefit for Bob Travis this weekend
OXFORD – The Oxford American Legion is rallying behind one of its own this weekend, hosting two fundraisers to raise money for Robert Travis.
Know as “Bob” to his friends, Travis suffered a stroke in November which left him paralyzed on his left side. After more than a month at Crouse Irving Hospital in Syracuse, he was transferred to Crown Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Cortland, where he has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation.
According to Bruce Wackford, the situation has caused a financial strain for Travis, who was working on a temporary basis for the Town of Oxford prior to the stroke.
“All he has is his Social Security,” he said, explaining that Travis has already come close to losing his house.
Wackford, who is a friend of Travis’ as well as a fellow Marine Corps veteran, is the driving force behind this weekend’s fundraiser.
“I guess you can call it a Marine helping a fellow Marine,” he said. “Anything I can do it help.”
He found others willing to support the cause at the American Legion Post 376 in Oxford, where Travis has been a member for more than 21 years.
This weekend’s fundraising efforts will begin on Saturday with a “Tim & Tim” chicken barbecue and bake sale at Post 376. Chicken will be ready at 9 a.m. and sold for $6 a half ($8 with salad and beans) until gone.
The effort will continue on Sunday, with a Legion breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. According to Wackford, a bake sale and 50/50 raffle will take place in conjunction with the breakfast.
“We’re looking for contributions and donations for the bake sale,” he said.
Wackford hoped his friend would be home in time to attend the fundraiser.
“He was supposed to be home on the 6th,” he explained. Unfortunately, his medical team decided he wasn’t quite ready to live on his own. He is now expected to be released from the rehabilitation facility on May 18.
Those wishing to volunteer for the event, donate baked goods or make a contribution can contact the American Legion at 843-8166 or call Wackford at 843-9626.
