NORTH NORWICH – Competitive jet fuel prices aren’t the only attraction promoters hope to use to build up Chenango County’s Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport.
Chenango County Airport Steering Committee member Mathew Giltner suggested bringing back a restaurant to the state Rt. 12 facility.
“It would serve as positive interaction between the community and the airport and as a place for visiting pilots,” he said a meeting of the committee May 12.
A former eating establishment at the restaurant closed sometime in the early 1990s.
Airport Assistant Administrator Franklin Turner said he is always asked about food.
“I get harassed all of the time about only having water,” he said.
The committee discussed leasing space to a restaurateur and possible locations for an eatery, whether inside the existing building or outside of the security fence in a separate facility.
In addition, Giltner suggested creating a display or setting aside room within the airport for biographical information about Lt. Warren E. Eaton and historical details about the airport.
Members reviewed contractors’ bids for resurfacing the airport’s runway, and gave Airport Administrator Donald L. MacIntosh the go ahead to proceed with a $1.2 million bid from Contour Construction Group of Binghamton. After state and federal funding is applied to the project, the county’s share, taken from an interest account from the Eaton trust, would amount to approximately $33,000.
MacIntosh said the timeline for the work depends upon the federal budget. The present runway’s blacktop is 20 years old.
