Norwich students published in literary magazine
NORWICH – Three Norwich students were recently notified that their literary works have been picked up by the 2011 Susquehanna Apprentice Writer.
Original literary works by Lane deCordova, a junior at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania; Patricia McNeil, a junior at Norwich High School; and Julia Simcoe, a NHS senior, were chosen for publication. Their winning entries were among 70 that were selected from a pool of 3,500 submissions.
The Susquehanna Apprentice Writer (circ.11,000) is a publication of the Writer’s Institute at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Penn. It publishes poems, stories and personal essays by high school students from a 20-state area. The 2011 edition will be available in September.
DeCordova’s poem, “For Leon” and her short story, “Capital P” were selected. DeCordova is co-editor-in-chief of the Mercersburg Academy’s 2011 edition of Blue Review, its annual literary-arts journal of student work. She also took third place in the independent college-preparatory school’s annual monologue competition in March, and played Liesl in the Academy’s production of “The Sound of Music” this winter. She has performed in dance and vocal recitals at Mercersburg and represented her school in Poetry Out Loud slam competitions in Gettysburg.
McNeil’s poems “Indian Summer” and “Repetition in the Revolution” were selected. Her poems, “Jillian” and “Letter to My Daughter on Her 16th Birthday” were previously published in the Writer’s 2009 and 2010 editions. In 2010, McNeil placed among the top 23 out of 500 teenagers who competed in the Urban Word NYC Annual Teen Poetry Slam, and she was a semifinalist at Urban Word’s New York Knicks Poetry Slam competition this year. McNeil took third place in the Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival slam in September 2009.
Simcoe’s poem “When I Was Six” was selected for Apprentice Writer. Her school activities include playing the violin with the Norwich High School orchestra and the Little Delaware Youth Ensemble in Oneonta. She will spend a year in Lille, France with Rotary Youth Exchange, and was accepted to Colby College in Maine.
All three students have performed as members of the Norwich High School poetry team, public speaking and drama classes. DeCordova and McNeil have competed in slams at the State University College in Oneonta, at Bright Hill Press in Treadwell and Delhi, and in Norwich and Oxford.
The Writer’s Institute oversees a nationally recognized undergraduate creative writing major with six full-time writers as faculty who service 165 creative writing majors at a school of 2,200 students. Its faculty regularly publishes novels, memoirs, and poetry collections with major publishers.
