NHS senior, BOCES student earns scholarship

NORWICH – Norwich High School senior Nate Perry, who is a member of SkillsUSA and the National Technical Honor Society, is more than a little excited for his upcoming graduation and subsequent enrollment at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Before he can graduate, however, he’s got to make a trip to Kansas City, where he’ll be one of four students nationwide to receive a $1,000 NTHS scholarship.

In an effort to promote outstanding student achievement within career and technical education, SkillsUSA partnered with NTHS, encouraging chapters across the country to consider participation in the honor society as part of its annual program, according to the SkillsUSA website, www.skillsusa.org. Students who join the honor society are expected to demonstrate academic achievement, skills development, leadership, honesty, responsibility and good character.

According to BOCES Visual Communications Instructor Sandy Sheldon, where Perry is in his second year, the student has consistently displayed all of the above.

“Nate’s a very good student, he’s dedicated and he’s willing to go above and beyond and take on extra projects,” said Sheldon. “At first, he didn’t give himself enough credit, but I could tell he had the ability and it’s been nice to see him grow in confidence. I think he surprised himself.”
