Tragic accident takes life of 6-year old child

NORWICH – A six-year old child died Thursday evening after being struck by a car in the driveway of her family’s home.
According to the New York State Police, Leah M. Osterhout, 6, was in the driveway of her home at 4250 State Hwy 23 in Norwich when she was accidentally run over by a vehicle driven by her mother, Melissa Osterhout.
Police say the child was taken in a private vehicle to Chenango Memorial Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
According to Chief Dispatcher A. Wesley Jones of the Chenango County 911 center, a brief, “indiscernible” 911 call was received from the residence.
“Upon calling back, there was no answer ... and we dispatched patrol,” Jones said. The first officers on the scene arrived to find no one at home.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation which, according to the State Police, is ongoing.
By Friday, the Norwich community had already started rallying around the Osterhout family. Friends have organized a bottle drive to raise money for the family and are spreading the word via Facebook. As of press time, 470 people had RSVP’ed to the Facebook event, many of whom have left their condolences, messages of support and memories of Leah.
“My heart just breaks for all of you ...you are in my thoughts and prayers,” posted one visitor to the page.
A complete obituary for Leah appears on today’s Page 6.
