Colonia, Norwich Merchants team for Harry Potter marathon

NORWICH – The Colonia Theater will host a Harry Potter marathon next week in support of local food pantries and the SPCA. The event is sponsored by the Norwich Merchants Association.
The marathon will begin on Friday, July 8 with “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and will continue through July 15 with one movie shown per night. The cost of admission is either a $2 donation or a can of food. On July 15, there will be a midnight showing of the latest and final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,” which will be regular price admission.
Colonia General Manager Jeannie Barnes said they wanted to do something special for the final Harry Potter film. The franchise has attracted a huge following and, according to USA Today, the film series is poised to take the rank of highest-grossing film series.
“First we talked to Warner Brothers to get a price,” said Barnes. “[Then] decided to bring it to the Merchants Association.” Many members of the Merchants Association were enthusiastic about sponsoring the event, she said.
Fans hoping for the full Harry Potter experience will get their wish as well. The midnight showing of the newest film will feature a costume contest with prizes for winners. The contest will be split into a few categories including a Harry Potter look-a-like award, cutest wizard award and best overall costume. Barnes said Parson’s Daughter owner Sharon Jeffer will also be selling Harry Potter candy at the shows.
Barnes, herself, is a fan of the popular J.K. Rowling books and said she would most likely be sitting in on many of the movies. “I’m very excited about this,” she said.
Jeannie and her father Richard Barnes took over the Colonia in January and have been trying to create new opportunities for movie and videogame lovers alike. “We want to expand what we do with the Wii and Xbox 360,” she explained. “We’ve teamed up with the library for a tournament.”
Barnes said she hopes there will be more opportunities for movie marathons in the future. Just a few of her ideas include “Twilight,” “The Avengers” and possibly even “Star Wars.” She said she also hopes to bring back classic movie night.
The Colonia has been undergoing renovations since January. “We want to update some things ... some of the paint is starting to fade,” said Barnes. “But we want to maintain it as it is.” Barnes explained that her family has always loved the small-town theater. “It’s been here since 1914 and I want it to be in this town for another 100 years.”
Showtimes for the marathon will be 4 p.m. on July 8, 11 a.m. on July 9 and 10, and 4 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. from July 11 through July 14. Each day will be a different movie in the series.
