YMCA hosts track and field camp this summer
NORWICH – The Norwich Family YMCA is hosting a track and field camp for kids at the Norwich High School track each Wednesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. throughout the summer. All youth ages 8 and above with an interest in running faster and better can attend. Other skills and events such as block starts, hurdling, high and long jumping, baton hand-offs for the relays, shot put and discus will be introduced and practiced.
“Among the many reasons for kids to participate, is that the skills they practice at camp will benefit them greatly in all other sports – particularly the speed and explosive drills. Naturally, we hope the camp sparks an interest in the sport of track and field itself. It’s a wonderful sport because there’s an event for everyone, so no one sits the bench. Also, success simply relies on the individual’s hard work and no one can take those ‘personal bests’ away,” said Shannon Gawronski, the camp director.
Experienced coaches will be on hand, and many of the area’s best track and field athletes will attend to demonstrate the skills of the sport. The athletes will also give their time and attention to the kids, which often makes a lasting impression and inspires younger ones to want similar successes. “It’s really a valuable experience for the kids to be paired with some of the best high school athletes this area has ever produced,” said Gawronski.
For more information about the track and field camp, contact Gawronski at the YMCA, 336-6638, extension 24, or stop by the track on any given Wednesday.
