Gus Macker needs your help!
NORWICH – Gus Macker organizers say they’re well below the required number of referees for next weekend’s three-on-three basketball tournament.
According to local Macker director Tom Revoir, the minimum amount of referees, or “Gus Busters,” the event needs is 65 – but ideally he would like around 80.
At the moment, only 40 have stepped forward to volunteer. “We’ve never been this low ... we’ve exhausted our list,” said Revoir.
The longtime tournament director postulated that many of the people who have been volunteering for the last 15 years are tired due to the fast-pace and excitement of the weekend. “We need new blood,” he said.
Revoir guaranteed the tournament would still go on, but admitted he’s worried what will happen if no one else offers their time. “We’re not going to be able to have Gus Busters on every court,” he said.
To be a “Gus Buster,” you need to be at least 18 years old and have a functioning knowledge of basketball. There will be a training session at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 7 at the Norwich Family YMCA which will last about an hour and a half. The purpose of this session is to go over rules of the game and strategies for being a referee.
Gus Macker is also looking for volunteers willing to cover registration, garbage detail, set-up and tear-down.
