Hot Club of Cowtown at EOH Saturday
EARLVILLE – Words such as “fierce” and “explosive” describe the acoustic-powered western swing and gypsy jazz of Hot Club of Cowtown appearing on the historic stage of the Earlville Opera House this Saturday, July 9 at 8 p.m. The performance of Hot Club of Cowtown is generously sponsored by Seven Oaks Clubhouse Restaurant and by media sponsor WAER FM.
The Austin-based trio mixes the western swing of Bob Wills with the hot jazz of Django Reinhardt into something downright combustible. This combo brings a youthful spirit to the traditional music of a bygone era with violinist-singer Elana James, singer-guitarist Whit Smith and upright bassist Jake Erwin. The band is back to help the Earlville Opera House celebrate it’s 40th anniversary with some of our favorite artists … they last played the EOH in 2009 greatly expanding their regional fan base!
“The trio plays vintage swing music, infused with a jazzy twist, and recently wrapped a 22-city tour with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson. ‘I really like the gypsy swing music that the Hot Club plays,’ said [EOH 2007 performer Dan] Hicks. ‘They are an exceptional group, but the thing that really sets them apart is their guitarist. [Smith] is really a virtuoso.’” - San Bernardino Sun
And, while Elana James is a fiddle/violin virtuoso, sometimes it is her voice that captures the attention of critics. Writing in The New York Times Jon Pareles said, “Elana [James’s] throaty violin solos arrived in terse, epigrammatic phrases with a sprint, every so often, into chromatic harmony. She also sang in a breathy, un-self-conscious voice that made every double-entendre seductive.”
The band has been featured on All Things Considered, The Grand Ol’ Opry, $40 Dollars a Day with Rachel Ray, Mountain Stage, A Prairie Home Companion, and numerous other radio and television programs.
The high-energy Hot Club of Cowtown will be swinging at EOH this Saturday in the incredible acoustics of the historic theater! General admission is $18 and $16 with an EOH membership. Students are discounted to $13. Premium seating is available for added $5. The EOH Theater is wheelchair-accessible with a ramp and a lift.
