Norwich man arrested for welfare fraud

NORWICH – A Norwich man has been charged with felony welfare fraud after allegedly receiving $3,514 in public assistance to which he was not entitled.

David S. Piro, 43, of Norwich was arrested July 15 following an investigation by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Social Services Fraud Investigation Unit. He is charged with third degree welfare fraud, a class D felony, and offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, a class E felony.

According to Lt. Richard Cobb of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, Piro failed to accurately report the income of another person living at his residence.
