Bail doubled for part-time corrections officer charged with domestic violence

NORWICH – A Norwich City Court Judge has granted the district attorney’s request to double the bail of a part-time county corrections officer accused of detaining, choking and threatening a woman with a gun during a domestic dispute.
Edward J. Knuth Jr. was arrested Sunday by the Norwich City Police following investigation into the incident, which took place in the City of Norwich.
He has been charged with two felonies – second degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class E felony, and first degree unlawful imprisonment, a class D felony – as well as third degree assault, second degree menacing and criminal obstruction of breathing, all Class A misdemeanors.
Knuth was arraigned in Norwich City Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail.
Yesterday, District Attorney Joseph McBride asked Judge James Downey to increase Knuth’s bail to $100,000, citing the violent nature of the incident, the defendant’s behavior on the night in question and conversations with the victim. Present were two Norwich City Police officers, prepared to give testimony if needed.
McBride also requested that Knuth be given a mental health evaluation.
Knuth appeared before the court represented by his defense attorney, Frank Revoir. Revoir had no objection to either of the DA’s requests. In fact, he said he had advised his client to remain at the correctional facility for the time being.
Revoir also consented to a postponement of a felony hearing on the matter, which was scheduled to take place Thursday.
McBride said the case could go directly to the Chenango County grand jury, which is to be convened next week.
According to Undersheriff James Lloyd, Knuth has been employed as a part-time corrections officer at the Chenango County Correctional Facility since June of 2010, and as such is still within his 18-month probationary period.
“He has been suspended without pay,” Lloyd said, pending disciplinary procedures.
Lloyd said this is the first time in his 23 years with the Sheriff’s Office that one of their own has been in the correctional facility. He confirmed that an internal investigation is underway.
An order of protection was been granted to the victim, which prevents Knuth from contacting her either directly or indirectly.
