Deer, rain to blame for 10-A accident
NORWICH – A deer caused a Norwich man to lose control of his truck on rain-slicked county road yesterday afternoon, according to a law enforcement officer at the scene.
According to Deputy Anthony Lawrence of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, 59 year-old John Aikins of Norwich was traveling east on County Road 10-A when a deer leapt off an embankment in front of his Mazda pick-up truck.
At the time, Aikins was on a curved, downhill stretch of the roadway near Barnes Road in the Town of Norwich. It had recently begun to rain, and Lawrence said the surface of the roadway was slippery. Aikins lost control of the vehicle, which rolled on the embankment, traveling roughly 100 yards before coming to a rest upside down in the ditch, perpendicular to the roadway.
