Calling all flowers: Pampered posies in demand at the Fair
NORWICH – The light showers yesterday and today have helped a bit, but this summer’s drought conditions and hot temperatures have taken their toll in the garden. Keeping blooms colorful has been an ongoing battle.
But what would the Chenango County Fair be without the garden clubs’ annual flower show in Floral Hall? In a desperate plea for posies of all shapes and sizes, organizers are encouraging participants to register any particular flower or flowers they hope to have, but to actually bring in whatever has survived the heat by next Monday morning.
“You can bring anything in that you want that day, the gal at the gate can help with the forms ... and I know that there are flowers out there that have survived the sun,” said Marilyn Kochersperger, entries director.
There are lots of categories of flowers and types of arrangements from which to choose. This year’s exhibit theme is “Romance,” with entries categorized in displays such as “Love Me Tender” for annuals, “Always” for perennials and “Someday” for bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes, for example. Youth gardeners are encouraged to participate in a special exhibit of their own called, “Looking Ahead,” with “Young Love” annuals; “BFF” perennials; “Puppy Love” container grown plants; and “Just Friends” combination plantings.
The flowers need to be at the Fair on Sunday evening or Monday morning. The show is judged Monday afternoon to assure that all is in place and ready when the Fair starts at noon on Tuesday.
The Chenango County Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 9-14. Call Kochersperger for more information about the flower show at 336-1669.
