These attacks on the Tea Party are hilarious. For instance, the Vice-President and his cronies call the Tea Party folks terrorists. Yet they cannot bring themselves to use that word for the Islamic nuts who kill and maim. They concocted some antiseptic term for them.
There is a reason so many of the attacks on the Tea Party are vicious. The establishment fears them. The politicians of both parties fear them. The guys who don’t want to change the good ol’ boy way of doing things – they fear them.
They want to keep raising spending and keep raising taxes. They want to keep hauling in fat contributions. From those who benefit from the higher spending: The unions. The business groups. The trial lawyers. The education machine. The big businesses on subsidies from government. The entrenched bureaucrats. The lobbyists. The bureaucrats.
There is an army of such folks who do not want to change things. They do not want reforms. Because reforms would threaten their jobs.
Imagine if we reformed our tax code. Made it as simple as some tax codes overseas. Made it so you could do your taxes on a postcard. Ended all deductions. Stopped the practice of using the code to reshape society. Used it solely to collect taxes.
An army of accountants, lawyers, estate planners and tax advisors would have fits. They and thousands of those who lobby for deductions would be out of work.
And so, most such folks are going to oppose the Tea Party’s efforts to simplify our tax code.
The Tea Party favors a balanced federal budget. Many want a Balanced Budget Amendment to our constitution. Many of the above will cry “Whoa!” to that idea. Especially our politicians in Washington. They know that balanced budgets would sap much of their power.
The Tea Party favors an end or severe reduction of earmarks. I don’t need to suggest how lawmakers feel about this idea.
The Tea Party wants to limit the annual growth in federal spending. Politicians from both parties fear such a limit. Along with everybody who taps government for money.
The Tea Party wants to identify the constitutionality of every new law. Wants to make sure that what Congress passes is constitutional. That might seem reasonable to you. It is poison to politicians.
The Tea Party wants real audits of federal agencies. To ferret out waste and corruption. And to identify agency policies that violate our constitution. How many bureaucrats do you suppose favor this?
The Tea Party wants to change the way business is done in Washington. Those who are engaged in that business do not want to change. And please do not let Republicans tell you it is only the Democrats the Tea Party frightens. Tea Party leaders have told us the movement gets much of its support from those who are unhappy with mainstream Republican leaders.
This movement is more grass roots than probably any major movement in the last century. It is a lobbyist in the sense that big unions and business interests are lobbyists. Those groups funnel fortunes into politicians’ campaigns. They threaten to work against politicians who don’t come through for them.
The Tea Party mostly threatens to de-elect those who go against Tea Party principles. More significant is that they threaten to upset the good ol’ boy apple cart.
Therefore, attacks on them will grow more numerous. And more vicious. And more coordinated. The party is too much of a threat to masses of good ol’ boys and girls.
