Oxford Historical Society’s annual band concert & ice cream social Thursday night
OXFORD – It’s time again for one of Oxford’s great annual summer traditions, the Oxford Historical Society’s (OHS) Ice Cream Social and Concert! The Oxford Community Band's Summer Concert Series will be held Thursday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m. at the OHS Depot-Museum. All are welcome to share in this wonderful social event of the season. There will be music, a basket raffle – including a copy of the new book - Oxford (Images of America Series), ice-cream from the Behes, and an exhibit of Oxford business memorabilia as well as the new, permanent Ingersoll Civil War Collection. There will also be a special sing-a-long, of a genuine Oxford song, directed by Francis Wilcox.
The Oxford Community Band will set up outdoors, under the overhang of the authentic D. L. & W. railroad depot (built circa 1920) at 1 Depot Street. OHS President, Society Officers anticipate being host to over 100 community members in attendance for this pleasurable hour of music. This summer, the band is under the direction of Becky Sabine. They will play marches, show tunes, overtures and novelty selections for the enjoyment of the Oxford community. As is the tradition with this summer performance, it will be accompanied by delicious ice-cream generously provided by Steve and Sherry Behe, sold at the old fashioned price of five cents a bowl. Visiting Oxford Band alumni are encouraged to make themselves known to the band or bring an instrument and sit in. As always, the performance is free of charge.
The History Museum’s doors will be open to view the permanent exhibit of the “T. G. Ingersoll Civil War Collection” and a summer display of Oxford business souvenirs.
As a special event, everyone will help make a little history at this ice cream social. Special musical guest, Francis Wilcox, will bring the music and play the century old song, “Lord Uri Tracy.” He will get everyone together to sing this nearly forgotten, original Oxford song so it will live on in our time.
So pack up a blanket or folding chair so you can relax and enjoy this evening of music, ice cream, history and fun on the Depot’s lawn in comfort.
