Norwich Elks mark 100th anniversary

NORWICH – The Elks Lodge 1222 had a successful weekend in the newly finished East Park on Saturday, said Exalted Ruler Jeff Cola.
The event drew a crowd of a couple hundred people and was an opportunity for the public to both admire the new park and get an idea what the Elks Lodge does for the community, he said.
“It was a great event, with great entertainment and the park couldn’t look more beautiful.”
Entertainment was provided by the Beadle Brothers, who took advantage of the new stage to play their set. There was also a face-painter and barbecue pulled pork provided by the Elks Lodge.
In order to get the youth and children involved, the Lodge also held a “Why I’m Proud to be an American” essay contest. The contest had 42 entries and winners received savings bonds in the amount of $25 or $50.
According to Cola, the event was mainly to support the Elks Lodge and help the community understand that it is a non-profit organization whose main goals include community action and donations. They have numerous programs designed to give back to the area including a donation of dictionaries each year to school and a hoop-shoot contest that awards scholarships.
“It’s a tough nut to crack getting the community to know what we’re doing,” he admitted. “But if you want support, you have to make the public aware.”
