Afternoon accident claims life of mother and daughter

GREENE – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of a two-car collision in Greene which took the lives of an Oxford woman and her child.

According to Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr., 29-year old Amanda Demuth and her two children were headed south on County Road 32 in a 1989 Saturn SL when a 1997 Buick Park Avenue driven by 70-year old Herbert Corey of Greene is believed to have crossed into her lane.

“They hit head on,” Cutting said.

The collision took place at approximately 1:50 p.m. Monday, on a straightaway roughly 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile south of the county road’s intersection with Jackson Hill Road, south of the Village of Greene.

“It was a terrible crash,” the sheriff said.

LifeNet helicopter was initially put on standby, but was later called off.

Demuth and her 6-year-old daughter Amara perished in the accident. Her 9-year old son Gavin, who was also in the vehicle, suffered a broken left arm. He was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital by ambulance.
