Wilcox lifts Greene with hat trick
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Greene 3, Walton 2
GREENE – Walton gave defending MAC champion Greene all it could handle in Wednesday’s home opener for the Trojans.
Sophomore Paige Wilcox scored three times for Greene, the decisive third tally coming 19 minutes into the second half to give her team a two-goal cushion.
“Walton was definitely aware of Paige, and she had to work really hard for her shots,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone. “She has tremendous foot skills, and many times she had to beat several players to get shots off.”
Wilcox scored just 1:16 into the game before Walton’s Carolyn Butler knotted the game six minutes later. Wilcox’s second goal gave her team a one-goal lead at halftime.
The Trojans finished with a decisive 18-7 advantage in shots on goal, but were stymied several times by a stingy Warriors defense. “Their goalie had a nice game, and their defense definitely made some nice plays on us,” Stone said.
Greene hosts Susquehanna Valley on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the Trojans’ tournament.
