Norwich church collecting donations for Irene victims

NORWICH – The United Methodist Committee on Relief, or UMCOR, is collecting donated items for disaster relief in Schoharie County, said Pastor Jeff Hale of Norwich. The church is asking that the public donate either a health kit or a cleaning bucket containing various necessities for the people in need.
According to Hale, Chenango County is in the same church district as Schoharie and immediately took up the cry for help. Schoharie County was one of the hardest hit by the effects of Hurricane Irene.
The donations received by the church will be delivered regularly to those in need and there is no cut-off to how much can be donated. Any extras packages will be provided to the Catskills region, which also sustained a good deal of damage during last week’s storm.
“We want to make sure everything gets to the right place,” said Hale. He explained that pre-made buckets and packages would be ideal, but even single items would be appreciated and sorted by the church. Anyone wishing to donate money in lieu of items may contact the church as well.
Word of this philanthropic gesture was simply passed by word of mouth, said Hale. He explained he alerted the parish and the parish proceeded to forward the message throughout the community.
Hale also stressed the fact that these packages are not simply for the members of the church. Anyone can donate the items and the package will be delivered to any member of the community that needs one.
UMCOR makes it their business to provide supplies for disaster relief. According to Hale, there are dozens of warehouses full of supplies for such occasions. Methodist Churches across the country help to keep them stocked throughout the year so in case of emergency, the items can be immediately shipped.
“We are the connectual service,” said Hale. “We can be very helpful because we can carry these costs.”
Hale said that in this case, due to the close proximity, it is easier to simply collect and donate the baskets locally to reduce the amount of time it takes.
According to Hale, the church’s doors are always open in case members of the community can not stay at their homes due to flooding or are in need after the storms.
For a list of the items needed for each package, or any other information about donating, contact Pastor Jeff Hale or Pastor Nancy Hale at 334-2895. If you would like to donate money to the cause, stop the church between the hours of 8:30-12:30 or mail your donation to 74 North Broad St., Norwich.
