Red Cross to offer free meals, showers due to power outages
NORWICH – With upwards of 2,000 people still without power across Chenango County following tropical storm Irene’s bombardment of the east coast, the American Red Cross is setting up a Day Services Center at the Chenango Campus of DCMO BOCES, Route 32 in the Town of North Norwich, which opens today.
According to Sharon Aswad, chief program and response officer for the south central region of the American Red Cross, the center will be open sometime today until power is completely restored. A hot meal will be served at 5 p.m. and hot showers will be available.
Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matt Beckwith said NYSEG is expected to have the majority of its restoration effort completed by late Friday or – in some areas – Saturday. For some residents, however, the wait will be longer, due to electrical inspections and other issues beyond NYSEG’s control.
“We’re making progress, but there was so much wind damage, there were so many downed lines and so many trees knocked down,” stated Beckwith. “NYSEG has been working day and night and they’re doing the best they can.”
NYSEG is currently delivering dry ice and bottled water on a daily basis to the Norwich Fire Station, 31 East Main St., reported Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo. Supplies are going quickly, he added, and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“We have a good supply now,” said Chawgo. “We’ve been running low on a daily basis, but we have plenty of water now. I can understand people’s frustration but it could have been a lot worse.”
Chawgo said people traveling long distances for water or dry ice should contact the Fire Station at 334-3411 ahead of time to check on the availability of supplies. The fire department also has water hoses on hand for those wishing to bring down empty containers. The New Berlin Fire Department, he added, has supplies as well.
In addition, the Norwich Family YMCA has offered its shower facilities, although they do not have the resources to provide meals, added Beckwith.
Fire departments across the county are continuing to aid outlying counties, providing fire protection and filling in for departments which were hit even harder by Irene. When you look at the damage some areas received, said Chawgo, Chenango County “dodged a bullet.”
Other American Red Cross Day Service Centers are now open in Broome County, located at the Deposit High School and Windsor Middle School, as well as Otsego and Delaware counties, at the Cooperstown Central School and Margaretville Advent Christian Church respectively.
