Greene clicks in all phases of the game
GREENE – Seton Catholic Central will be in position to win most of its games this season thanks to strong-armed quarterback Caleb Scepaniak and his band of sticky-fingered receivers. Against Greene Saturday afternoon, however; the Saints and Scepaniak were reeling early and never recovered.
Greene senior Dan Carlin scored three touchdowns – two rushing and one on a punt return – and he finished with a team-high 97 yards on the ground in a 38-12 opening-game victory.
The highly touted Trojans scored on their first four possessions, and only one touchdown required a sustained scoring drive. Carlin returned a punt 45 yards for Greene’s second score, Brett Ramsey had a 47-yard punt return to set up the third TD, and Ramsey’s 32-yard interception return of Scepaniak led to another short scoring drive.
“We definitely talked about doing our jobs and setting the tone and the tempo up front,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “We told that to the line, and our (line) surge was always moving them backward.”
On the high school level, special teams is often give short shrift in practice time. Not for Paske, who said his team dedicates sustained amounts of time to special teams play every day in practice. “We work on (special teams) a lot, and we were able to take care of things there today,” the Greene coach said.
Before that, the Trojans flashed its bend-but-not-break defense on the Saints’ opening drive of the game. John Kline found a couple of cracks early in the Greene defense rushing first down. Paske’s defense stitched those small holes up quickly, and Seton called only six more running plays over the final three quarters.
That left Scepaniak and his receivers to shoulder the offensive load, and the junior quarterback did not have much luck in the first half. In addition to Ramsey’s first-half interception, Dan Dickman and Cole Browning added sacks.
“We wanted to get pressure inside on (Scepaniak),” Paske said. “We felt if he was able to sit back in the pocket, he would pick us apart. He’s a good quarterback who throws a nice ball.”
Greene rolled to a 28-0 lead getting a five-yard TD run from Dickman early in the first quarter that capped an eight-play, 77-yard drive. Carlin returned a punt 45 yards to paydirt on Greene’s next offensive sequence, and Ramsey’s long punt return paved the way for a Carlin nine-yard TD scamper. The fourth straight score ended in Keegan Cerwinski’s three-yard plunge. That drive required only 21 yards, with the critical play the aforementioned Ramsey pick.
Scepaniak finally got on track leading his club to a late first-half score. Too, with the game out of reach, Scepaniak guided his club to a too-little, too-late touchdown in the fourth. In all, Greene had three interceptions and three sacks on defense. Offensively, the Trojans’ offense rushed for 258 yards on 39 carries. Carlin added a third TD when he dashed 49 yards down the left sideline in the third. Senior Tim Gell tacked on 25-yard field goal in the waning moments of the fourth quarter.
Next up for Greene is defending Section IV Class C champion Chenango Forks. The Blue Devils opened their season with a 33-8 win over Windsor. “It will be a big division battle next week that will be on the road,” Paske said. “It’s tough to play down at their place, but our kids will be ready.”
